What's PCOS Hair Loss?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), like most hormonal imbalances, is accompanied by a slew of unfavourable symptoms, such as hirsutism, irregular periods, weight gain, increased acne, and so on.

While excess body and facial hair is another difficult symptom of PCOS, there is a sign on the other side of the coin: unexpected hair loss.

Androgenic alopecia is a term used to describe hair loss or thinning hair caused by PCOS. High testosterone levels in PCOS can cause hair loss.  Androgenic alopecia causes women to lose hair around their temples and frontal scalp and that is different than Male pattern of baldness.

What can you do for PCOS related Hair Loss?

PCOS-related hair loss must be addressed throughly, both externally with proper hair care and internally with diet and exercise and consultation with a health care provider about the potential benefit of medications. Always speak to your doctor about what treatment can be best for you.

Hair treatment may take six months to a year to produce results. Medication should be taken on a strict schedule, and hair care procedures should be performed on a regular basis (not just until the first positive results are noticeable, but until hair is fully restored).

It's also worth noting that if hair thinning is caused by hormonal imbalances, restoring hair health may be possible by balancing hormone levels. A well-balanced diet with vitamins or supplements recommended by a health care provider may also help optimise hair health.

Magnesium, zinc, iron (found in nuts, legumes, mushrooms, and eggs), and vitamins A (found in carrots), B (found in seafood, cheese, bananas, and tomatoes), E (found in oatmeal), and F (found in fatty fish) are all beneficial to health. One of the most common causes of hair loss is iron deficiency, and people with PCOS typically have lower ferritin levels. Iron levels can be raised by eating iron-rich foods and/or taking iron supplements.

Zinc, selenium, silicon, biotin (vitamin B7), and choline all have a significant impact on hair growth (vitamin B4). Simple tests can determine the amount of vitamins and minerals in the body. Minor deficiencies are easily remedied with dietary changes. Zinc is abundant in nuts and pumpkin seeds, selenium in beans and broccoli, silicon in rice, biotin in peanuts and liver, and choline in eggs and seafood.

If the deficiency is critical, seek treatment from a health care provider. The right hair products are also essential for healthy hair growth. Wax and mineral oils, which can form a film on the scalp and interfere with normal sebum production, should be avoided in hair care products. Hydrolyzed proteins (keratin and collagen) and B vitamins can be beneficial to the hair.

High temperatures from blow drying or styling with a curling or flat iron, as well as harsh chemicals from hair dyes, perms, straighteners, or relaxers, can all cause hair damage.
