Cancer Prevention Action Week: Awareness, Empowerment & Action

Cancer is a formidable adversary that affects millions worldwide. In the United Kingdom alone, around 1,100 people receive a cancer diagnosis every day. But there is hope — research shows that approximately 40% of all cancer cases could be prevented through lifestyle and environmental changes.

What Is Cancer Prevention Action Week?

Taking place in the last week of February, Cancer Prevention Action Week (19–25 February 2024) is a campaign led by the World Cancer Research Fund. This annual event empowers individuals with knowledge and tools to reduce their risk of cancer. It’s a time to reflect, take action, and share life-saving information.

Why Cancer Prevention Matters

While tremendous progress has been made in cancer treatment, prevention remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the burden of cancer. Making small, consistent changes to your lifestyle can have a powerful and lasting impact on your own health — and that of your loved ones.

8 Key Recommendations for Cancer Prevention

The World Cancer Research Fund outlines science-backed steps that can significantly reduce your cancer risk:

  1. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Obesity is linked to several cancers, including breast, bowel, and prostate. Aim for a balanced diet and regular activity.
  2. Move More: Stay active! Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly.
  3. Eat More Whole Grains, Vegetables, Fruits & Beans: These are rich in fibre, antioxidants, and nutrients that protect your cells.
  4. Avoid High-Calorie Foods & Sugary Drinks: These contribute to weight gain without offering nutritional value.
  5. Limit Red & Processed Meats: These have been linked to bowel cancer. Opt for poultry, fish, or plant-based proteins more often.
  6. Cut Back on Sugar-Sweetened Drinks: Replace with water, herbal teas, or sparkling water with lemon.
  7. Limit Alcohol: Alcohol raises the risk of cancers including breast, liver, and mouth. If you do drink, do so in moderation.
  8. Avoid Supplements for Cancer Prevention: Whole foods are more effective. Unless prescribed, supplements are not a substitute for a healthy diet.
