Top 4 Signs of Hair Loss in Women

Women's hair loss is more common than many people realise.  Most women do not detect signs  of hair thinning or balding until they are in their 50s or 60s, long after it has already started.

Women may take far longer to discover indications of hair loss than men since they prefer to keep their hair longer, thereby covering obvious signs of hair loss for many years. Women also lose hair over the top of their heads, although males often lose hair in concentrated places such as the crown or temple. This larger, more distributed pattern of hair loss complicates early identification.

Top of head thinning : This is the most prevalent form of hair loss that women experience as they age. Women typically have a broadening of the part in their hair. Men hair loss usually starts on the forehead. A receding hairline is an increasingly common hair loss pattern in elderly women (frontal fibrosing alopecia).

Spotty Bald Patches:  Some women have hair loss in the form of round or spotty bald patches on the scalp.  Before the hair comes out, your skin may feel uncomfortable or unpleasant.

Hair loss that occurs suddenly : Hair might become loose as a result of a physical or mental stress. Handfuls of hair may fall out as you are combing or washing your hair, or even when you gently pull on it. This form of hair loss often results in general hair thinning but is very transitory.

Patches: Scaling patches that extend throughout the scalp. This is an indication of ringworm.  It is sometimes accompanied by broken hair, redness, swelling, and leaking.

If you are concerned about ongoing hair loss in yourself and wish to seek treatment, see your doctor. Talk to your doctor about early treatment for women who have a bald spot (facial fibrosing alopecia) to prevent major irreversible baldness. Also, see your doctor if you observe abrupt or patchy hair loss, or if you notice greater hair loss than normal while combing or washing your hair.
Sudden hair loss might indicate an underlying medical problem that must be treated.
